"Dear readers, friends, those casually perusing, those forced to engage against their will, I know your time is limited, and I'd rather you read the book than this jacket copy, so I'll get right to it: the book you now hold in your hands was the hardest thing I have ever had to create. Even harder than my three children because at least Mark was involved in the start of the process. With the writing of this book, he just sat there and listened while I read to him, brought me water, stared at me while I ranted about how hard this process was and what business did I have doing this in the first place. He did offer some editorial notes, I can't lie. And plenty of good material...but the doing-the words, sentences, paragraphs, pages, cutting, more words, more sentences, occasional crying-that was all me. As with all difficult things in life, I am incredibly happy the process is over. I hope you enjoy the result. Not everything you read here matches the lady people see on their television sets every morning. Not everything I say is funny. But everything I've written is true, and from my heart. And, I hope, relatable-to folks who know what it feels like to work, raise a family, fight with their spouse, answer their kids' tough questions, love our parents as they age and we do too, and love our spouses once we've forgiven them for the fight. This is my life-as a professional, a wife, a daughter, a mom, a woman. This is a series of very long-winded short stories...ones that I hope don't immediately radiate with the pain that went into writing them-because if I'm really honest, there was a lot of joy too.
